‘Reach for the Stars’ Program at Muchatha High School

Reach for the Stars:

At the start of the year we expanded our Reach for the Stars program at Muchatha High School, engaging over 200 students from Forms 2, 3, and 4.

We opened with a question: What does the word ‘career’ mean to you?

Hands shot up. Students leaned in. And one by one, they shared their visions.

“A career is a goal that one achieves in life,” said one thoughtful voice.
“A career is something that one dreams of doing,” added another.

Their words struck a chord. They reminded us of a truth that guides our work: while many young people see a career as a destination, we help them understand that it’s a journey; one built through exploration, learning, and the courage to dream beyond what they know.

Exploring Passions and Interests

Next, we invited students to dive deeper:

 “What subjects ignite your curiosity?”

“What gets you excited to learn?”

We grouped them by favorite subjects: Languages, Applied Sciences, Pure Sciences, and Humanities. Then, using flip charts and team brainstorming, they mapped out careers connected to their academic interests.

The Applied Science group started with farming and charcoal burning; professions rooted in their daily reality. We expanded their thinking by introducing architecture and environmental science, showing how creativity and sustainability can build futures.

In the Pure Sciences group, students named doctors, nurses, and mechanical engineers. We introduced them to medical research and environmental science; fields where innovation can save lives and protect our planet.

The Humanities group leaned toward service-based careers: pastors, lawyers, community leaders. We broadened the view with roles like archivists; guardians of culture and history, and policy makers who shape ethical frameworks in society.

Language lovers explored teaching and editing. Their eyes lit up when they learned about authors, translators, journalists, and curators; storytellers and educators who use words to open minds and move hearts.

And then came the ‘aha’ moments:

“I didn’t know that to be a journalist, one needs to be good at languages!” said a curious Form 2 student.

“Today I learned a new word: cartographer. That’s someone who draws maps and charts!” said another.

One student beamed, “I love art. Learning that a curator manages museum collections, that’s a dream I didn’t know I had!”

The impact was undeniable. These young minds didn’t just learn about careers, they saw themselves in them.

Your support helps us bring students’ vision to life.

You can donate funds, provide stationery or sanitary towels, or partner with us to expand this initiative. Every donation, every notebook, every conversation helps open a door for a student who may never have seen it.
